Saturday Afternoon around Winterfeldplatz in Schöneberg
A good starting point for
a nice Saturday-afternoon-buzz is the weekly market at WINTERFELDPLATZ in
Schöneberg (U-Bahn Nollendorfplatz). It's a very
popular market for Schöneberg residents. If you arrive before 2pm you
can't do wrong. You can buy fresh vegetables, fruits or flowers, or have a
hangover-proof bratwurst at Christian's market stall (lamb, pork or beef).
Together with the dark German bread it provides a good shot of b vitamins to your dizzy brain.
All around the market you'll find several cafeacute;s bars and restaurants,
where the people hangout in the steet ( as soon as one single sunbeam breaks through the cloud) to booze and chat the afternoon away.
Bit outdated but preforming still strong on saterday afternoons is the Slumberland. Old people's home for failed revolutionaries, but at least, they drink a lot.
If you feel the desire to show-off your designer shades, you can do so in Café Sydney or just walk down Goltz strasse, parallel to the market, turn right at the church , and you'll see the
happy crowd sitting in front of MUTTER, which means nothing else than
>mother< or >screw-nut<. The public in Mutter is younger than in
Slumberland. They play more techno tunes, the bodies are a bit more tanned or
pale. But most importantly they serve a "SCHERDEL"WEIZENBIER
("yeast-wheat-beer") from the tub - another thiamine hammer. It's
yellow-ochre dim. But it tastes so fresh when it arrives ice-cold in its slim, misted
glass, that you have to order a second one directly. Despite the techno sound and the
ongoing beep beep of the mobile phones, the Mutter has a great hangover advantage.
They serve THAI FOOD and SUSHI. One of the best natural hangover cures on this
planet. They also display international newspapers, but I miss the Tribune (I don't - ed).
If you walk back to the church, and turn to the right into Goltzstr., behind some Indian and Thai cantinas you will
come to CAFÈ M. Art students serve there a good espresso, and sell beers
in bottles to super important artists, who probably even go to bed with their
shades on. Famous people who nobody knows, fighting their incognito with café
au lait. The M is an old institution though, but since they don't let in the
"General" from the "madattack" anymore, I visit the M
no longer.
The famous Café Goltz was shot down by police after a raid where the seized a solid amount of illicit drugs. Now Kentucky Fried Chicken took it over ... no further comment.
Behind the upcomming KFC you'll find one of Berlins best Hot Dogs ( Neuland) they garanttee you that the cow went happy to it's slaughter, and that it's belly never entered anything else than gras and water. No kidding, you'll taste it.
Opposite, behind Frankenstr. also on the good side (the right side) of Goltzstr. is the MR.HU, run by Husen and Frank. A small Bar-Cocktailbar. They serve the Netherland
"GROLSCH" beer, a cult-beer! Although I think it's overestimated, it has a
lot of fans. Anyway, it is better than Heineken. Frank also runs the Zulu Bar at Kleistpark. I sank a "Grolsch", and then walked acros the street for Berlin's best Hot Dog.
