Slumberland Berlin Schöneberg
to flash version
"Lütche Lage
in the morning"
Actually I don't know why I still hit
Slumberland. I known this bar since 1980. I've known this bar even before it existed.
In the mid-seventies it was the birthplace of the later famous "Dschungel" (long
gone and almost forgotten). Here I started two long lasting love affairs,
(also gone but NOT forgotten). Maybe I shouldn't go there
anymore... But when I arrived last Saturday afternoon at the Winterfeld
weekend market, Christian, who runs the "Bratwurstbude" at the entrance of the place, fed me with two of his lspicy lamb meatballs. Absolutely
delicious. Highly effective hangover killers. So I definitely needed
some water to dilute the condiments, and as everybody knows, beer contains about
95% water. So I walked over into Slumberland to order a small beer.
They have these little glasses wich embody just about half a pint. ( relax, Slumberkland serve pints as well),
We used to drink them in Hannover (sounds amazingly similar to "hangover" - ed)
where I grew up before I came to Berlin. It's
rare to find a bar in Berlin where they serve 0,2l beers. Absolutely rare. And
the beer looked good, and came with a promissing smile from... (name withheld)
Still dreaming I ran into
my friend Matze, also from Hannover, and now a successful TV-producer. I
think he likes to come here for the same reasons. Small beers. It's just better to drink
small ones, because you finish them faster, and then they stay fresh. After a couple of these blondes, we realised
that the best of the best come out Hannover and that we are the only tribe
on this planet, which drinks "Lü&;tche Lage" (roughly translated as
intimate meeting) Now it gets complicated: "Lütche Lage" is a
small beer together with a schnaps, a "korn", wich is a german pure grain
brandy, comparable to vodka. The art is in the ceremony of consumption: You
hold the beer glass and the schnaps glass in the same hand, and than drink the
two drinks at the same time in that way, that the schnaps enters the beer stream before entering your mouth and all without spilling . Who spills buys the next round. We are
both out of our homestate for ages, so it was a "splishing & a splashing". Believe it or not, people from Hannover can drink
15 "Lütche Lage" without forgetting the name of their mother. We found that
very funny. Not (name withheld). She refused to serve us our national drink! Another
subtle form of discrimination. At the sound of our soft protest, she kicked us out. Life can
be very hard. But we are hard, too. We're from Hannover.
